2024 has been an eventful year with the implementation of the updated Adventure Activities Regulations and SMS Requirements for Adventure Activity Operators. At AdventureMark, we’ve noticed that most operators have taken a positive approach to understanding the changes and updating their safety plans accordingly. This has meant that audit activity is fairly straightforward, as our reviews have been able to focus on looking at how operators have implemented these changes.
Unfortunately, a few operators had not updated their SMSs to align with the changes and this led to more protracted surveillance reviews as they tried to understand the changes during the surveillance, instead of simply providing evidence of their amendments and ongoing conformity.
I’m pleased to report that these operations were in the minority and, based on the recent surveillance period, it appears that New Zealand’s Adventure Activities sector is well-trained and well-prepared to continue to provide the high-quality experiences expected by clients.
The compliance aspect of work is seldom fun, but it does provide assurance that systems are working as intended and set us up for success when used properly. The AdventureMark team would like to thank our operators for their diligence and professionalism, and we wish you all the best for the summer season.
Please note that the AdventureMark office will be closed from 20 December until 13 January. If you have audit or surveillance documentATION that is due, please ensure you submit it well in advance of this period to allow for the necessary processing. If you currently have an audit or surveillance underway, please communicate directly with your appointed auditor to discuss their work schedule.
